The Paddle UK ladderThe white water
award ladder
Paddle UK’s three white-water Personal Performance Awards are the official measure of where you are on the river. From Progressive level the ladder branches into the separate Leadership awards. Each of our weekends earns one rung.
White Water Award
Endorses your skill, judgement and decision making for safe days out on rivers up to grade 2.
Progressive White Water Award
Progresses your paddling and decision making for safe days out on grade 3–4 rivers.
Advanced White Water Award
Advances your skills and decisions for safe days out on grade 4–5 water.
Leadership branch
A separate strand, not a fourth rung: White Water Leader qualifies you to lead groups on moderate grade 2(3) water; Advanced White Water Leader on grade 4. White Water Safety is required before assessment.
New to paddling? The ladder starts after the sheltered-water Paddle Awards (Start, Discover, Explore). Awards are optional — take the coaching without the certificate if you prefer; sign-off is by our Paddle UK Level 5 coaches.

The full Paddle UK professional pathway, delivered by Level 5 coaches. Train first, assess when you’re ready — White Water Safety is required before any leader assessment.
